Kinja'd!!!

Vtac Miata for your time. I have relatives that don’t believe in medicine. Their kid needs a real doctor. Can I do anything without parental consent? Anyone been in a similar situation?

2nd or 3rd cousins who live fairly close. I’ve met them twice, heard about them a few other times, cut them out of my life. I’m not going to beat around the bush, the parents are complete idiots and the two kids are suffering because of it. They’re only allowed to see naturopaths, which has gone just as poorly as you might imagine.

The parents are cut off from most of the family because... Well. What can you say to someone who believes tetanus shots are a conspiracy theory and are vehemently apposed to real, actual-this-stuff-works medicine? There’s a line of stupidity I can tolerate and the antivax crowd is well past that line. The kids however, are both welcome anytime and somehow have managed to grow into exceptionally sharp, motivated people despite the environment they’ve been brought up in. They occasionally show up or ask one of us for help and the rest of the family worries about them constantly (they’re 13 and 15).

The younger one called earlier describing symptoms that sound like tonsillitis, strep or some other throat infection. Swollen lymph nodes, very painful swallowing, red tonsils, fever, etc. I’d like to take him to a doctor that doesn’t believe in fairy magic and the power of healing words but I’m unsure how best to proceed. There is a 0% chance of getting either of the nut job parents to agree to this

Thoughts?

Well, short term it’s possible you could take them to an urgent care place or ER, but they’ll want guardian consent to treat a minor. Long term, the only way I can see is to get CPS involved in removing the kids in the basis that they’re in physical danger. That’s almost more traumatic in itself and very difficult.

You may have to just pray for them until they reach majority.

I’m not sure on the legality of intervening for the kids, however do you know if the kids have insurance under their parents? I can’t imagine people who don’t believe in medicine have health insurance. That could be catastrophic for everyone if they don’t

Well... I rate prayer higher than naturopathy in terms of medicinal value so that’s an idea.

The whole situation is mildly infuriating

More than mildly when kids are the victims. I asked my wife, the pediatrician, and she has nothing more to offer either.

Ask the parents if they have heard of these like minded former parents, and ask if they too want to end up in front of a judge staring down the barrel of decades in prison for failing to provide necessary medical aid to their legal dependant.

https://globalnews.ca/news/3935747/supreme-court-sets-tentative-hearing-date-for-case-involving-alberta-childs-meningitis-death/

God forbid their kid gets really sick and dies, but if it does I hope they put the parents under the damn jail... And you can tell them I said so.

“Husband free on bond, wife got a few months houses arrest”

That seems a bit lenient. Here’s hoping they’re put away for a long time and it’s incredibly public for all the other parents out there with similar beliefs

If they’re that sick an ER won’t wait for consent to treat them. Not every minor who walks in or shows up in an ambulance has a parent with them.

I’m hoping they get buried on the appeal, personally. Or just buried, period.

I can only assume the US justice system would be less lenient.

A lot less so than you might think:

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/08/12/most-states-allow-religious-exemptions-from-child-abuse-and-neglect-laws/

Specifically, if they’re Christian Scientists in Washington (and it sounds like they are), at least until recently they could more or less let their kid die without punishment. I don’t know if the law remains the same.

Kinja'd!!! Svend > AestheticsInMotion

Kinja'd!!!4

It’s a tricky situation.

You can’t take them yourself because that’s breaking the law.

Do you have emergency, late or out of hours doctors that do home visits?

You could phone one while they are at your house, let the doctor see them then let the legal system take it up when the parents deny treatment.

Or take them to an Emergency Room, let the nurse see them, then when they call the parents to confirm treatment is okay to proceed, then like before let the system take up the slack when the parents deny treatment.

Either way it’s putting yourself in an awkward way with the family but if you don’t get on with them, it’s not really an issue, it’s also not breaking the law, it’s letting someone with medical training see them and then pursuing it if they deem the child is at risk.

It’s awful that there are still anti medical treatment in this world.

I don’t mind people putting themselves at risk, but when it risks the life and we’ll being of others, that’s what really posses me off.

Under these circumstances, I agree. It’s not like they’re just going to show up and take the kids, but someone with some authority will begin taking notice and hopefully ensure the kid gets the treatment they need. At that point, if the parents want to fight it, maybe getting sent to a family members house to live (or worst case fostercare) isn’t so bad... All things considered.

You could file a complaint with Health and Human Services. If you want to do that, better do it now. Each case worker is overwhelmed with cases, so it could be a couple weeks before they even start to look into it. They have to look into it, but they are also allowed to prioritize their cases. Small children that are suffering physical/mental abuse, or malnutrition tend to come first.

Just saw this post and it looks like you got the help you needed. Shitty situation. The good news is with something like what you think they have, a doctor will just give them something to mask the symptoms and then maybe an antibiotic, which if diagnosed properly is treatable using homeopathy/plant oils. The overuse of synthetic antibiotics scare me... that’s how mrsa came to exist. They are just dumbed down synthetic versions of the active ingredients in plant oils. The bad news is most homeopathic care is done by people who are in no way qualified. Good luck man. On another note: when did you fit the s2k seats?? How did you do it??

Natropaths can get doctorates in AZ and open up their own clinics. They usually work as general practitioners. We have a natropathy medical school which trains them. Unlike religion, they use use the scientific method to develop treatments. However, a good natropath will tell you when a disease is beyond the scope of their practice. A whole lot of medicines are just comcentated forms of naturally occuring compounds.

You’re right. I was thinking about what he said about sore throats and fever. For sure if the kid were a trauma victim, they’d treat first and worry about consent later. And no question that’s where I’d take him in that situation.

Unfortunately there a few states offering similar recognition right now. I’m all for a well-rounded approach to medicine, focusing on total health and root causes (which is something our system is fairly bad at) but come on. These guys are 100% bunk. Pseudoscience at it’s finest, with their talk of harnessing the bodies “vital energy” to boost life force among other even more rediculous claims (that are all vehemently apposed by real doctors and scientists). These people are up there with flat-earthers. Here are a few other “treatment methods” that have all been proven to be completely ineffective. Some of them are still offered by naturopaths. The only time I’ve seen the scientific method in conjunction with Naturopathic medicine is when their claims are being debunked.

The “doctor” the kids normally go to apparently tries to align their energy points to get proper balance back into the body.

The S2k seats were just set in place. Honestly I think I’m going to go back to my original setup, but with real VIOS seats instead of replicas this time. I’ll keep the S2k seats for a long term project. I kinda want to reupholster the center section with a cool tribal wool blanket or something weird!

Well my first response just disappeared when I tried to take a picture...

Basically this: I see why you worry about those kids. There is definitely something to energies, but how can they ignore treating the illnesses directly? Dumb.

As for the seats. I got excited when I saw them in haha, but yeah would take some serious fab work for sure. Not sure I’ve ever seen s2k seats in a Miata. In the mean time you have some dope new furniture for your living room! Also tribal wool lol.

I’m still waiting on fab 9 to ship my pci mounting bracket and just staring at my Sparco Sprint here in my living room. It fits me perfectly... can’t wait to put it in.

I can’t speak to your own knowledge or experience with natropathy, but most of what you’ve listed here are used by quacks, not legit natropaths. Most of the treatments you’re referencing would be considered homeopathy, not natropathy.

I have a health sciences degree from the University of Arizona and they offered natropathy classes (integrative medicine). My degree was issued by the College of Medicine, so they definitely weren’t using pseudoscience as evidence for the efficacy of treatments. The natropathy school in Arizona even offers their doctorates in conjunction with the University of Arizona’s medical school.

Stock belts worked fine for me until I could afford harnesses. Just be sure to route them properly through the shoulder and waist holes so they’re tight and aren’t just going OVER the seat

Kinja'd!!! AestheticsInMotion > mXxxxXm24 /O/ /O/
04/18/2018 at 23:12

Kinja'd!!!1

Na it’s super simple. Just unbolt the bottom of the belt, and route it from the top through the left shoulder hole down to the left belt hole and then bolt the bottom back in place. When you use the belt you should put it over your body like normal and then through the right belt hole before latching it. But honestly I normally just went over the seat for the last step. Having the shoulder and left belt holes routed properly is the most important part

(Edit) a picture is worth a thousand words...

I have mine setup the same exact way. It was super simple to keep the stock three point belt with the seat. And putting a harness in is pretty easy as well. The only drilling involved is in the floor to get your 5th/6th points attached. I was able to just attach an eye-hook to the stock seat belt bottom bolt on one side and found an existing hole on the trans tunnel to use. Although, in the NA it should be even easier since the stock belt reciever mounts to the tunnel instead of the seat. So you do the same on both sides.

I liked the seats quite a bit, feel like I should pay the actual company something! I’ve got GPS trackers coming in. They’re super tiny and last for a very long time on a button battery. They will be hidden on all pricey items, plus I’m looking for a hardtop, and eventual garage

Kinja'd!!! Wrong Wheel Drive (41%) > AestheticsInMotion
04/19/2018 at 16:50

Kinja'd!!!0

Isnt the hardtop just more at risk of being stolen? I have seen some videos advertising some sort of tamper resistant mounts to make it harder to steal without cutting off the mounts. Since normally you can just smash the windows and off goes the top to make an easy $1k. I like the GPS tracker idea. I wonder if some sort of alarm system with phone alerting would be of value. But yeah physical security inside your own garage is certainly the best you could hope for.

Pretty sure I know who took my stuff. They were evicted, and lots of drug stuff and broken up bikes were found in the apartment. Hoping I don’t have to worry about this shit now that they’re gone..

Yeah the security brackets and hardware are apparently pretty good?? I know Garage star makes em... That’s the idea. Silent alarm with phone alerts is definitely something I’ll be looking into. My twenty-years-a-marine neighbor also set up security cameras and good god I would hate to be a thief caught by him....

04/20/2018 at 00:20

Kinja'd!!!1

It needed like 45 washers to make it fit there. I tried, it wasn’t pretty lol. The problem was that the receiver was too close to the seat to fit the buckle. I think the NA receiver is different maybe. I know that mounting to the tunnel was easy peasy and gave me no trouble once I tried that instead. I just had to use a passenger seat receiver on the driver side since it was reversed.

Depending on the seat and mount, you may be able to just mount to it anyways. I like the Trans tunnel mount better just because it seems more secure.

Certainly worth a try. Not difficult to mount to the tunnel though since no drilling is required. It was tough to thread the nut on the back with the Trans in the way but I did my harness on a lift so i was able to reach in there. You doing 5 or 6 point harness?
